Activity
steps:
1.
Take the orange and roll it on a table. You will notice that
the orange turns in different directions.
2.
Now push the wire through the center of the orange. While holding
the wire upright, spin the orange around. This time the orange
does not turn in different directions, but keeps spinning around
on the wire, which represents its axis
3.
Now take the quarter and hold it on it’s edge. Snap it with
your finger so that it spins on the table. The coin spins just
like the orange except there is no wire through it. The coin
is spinning on its axis.
4.
Imagine there is a line running through the coin like the wire
that runs through the orange. The axis of the coin is the imaginary
line on which the coin spins. The earth rotates on its axis
too. The earth’s axis is an imaginary line through the center
of the earth. The ends of this imaginary line are called poles.
One end is called the North Pole. On the other end is the South
Pole. (No, there are no actual poles at the top and bottom of
the earth!)
